The Straight Version

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez addressed the nation from the site of the train collision in Toledo province, expressing his full solidarity with the victims, their families and all those injured in the tragedy. Earlier, Transport Minister Óscar Puente said a computer malfunction had disrupted the railway’s safety system. He said the RENFE train had been instructed to resume its journey despite an active stop signal, before crashing into the stationary IRYO train. The collision on Wednesday killed at least 64 people and injured 58 others. Rescue teams continue to search the wreckage for survivors and bodies. It is Spain’s second deadly high-speed rail collision this year, following a January crash that killed 46 people.
